Your Culture Shapes Your You

August 9, 2026

You were once darkness. Now you are light. So live like it.

In this message from the Rooted and Grounded series through Ephesians, Paul turns fully practical in chapter 5. The first three chapters told us who God is. Now comes the harder question: given all of that, how do you actually live? The answer starts with how you see yourself. A kindergartner who walked into her first day of school saying "I can't read" had been shaped by a culture that told her what she was. The same thing happens to all of us. Whatever culture you're immersed in shapes how you think about yourself and how you treat other people.

Paul's instruction isn't a list of rules to follow. It's a direction to face. When you receive the light, fruit starts growing, goodness, righteousness, truth, and you begin to notice that things you were once comfortable with start to feel different. That's not moralizing. That's transformation. And rather than calling out the darkness with signs and diatribes, Paul says something more demanding: don't mention it, model something different. You don't create light, you reflect it. The moon doesn't argue with the darkness. It just shines.
