Sniffing Out Fake Prophets

March 15, 2026

In this fifth message of The Familiar Stranger series, we tackle a topic that makes many believers uncomfortable: prophecy. Our cultural understanding has been shaped by Mad Magazine cartoons and Nostradamus predictions, but biblical prophecy isn't primarily about predicting the future. It's about sharing the encouragement of the Holy Spirit with others.

Drawing from 1 Corinthians 14, we discover that Paul urges us to desire prophecy above all other spiritual gifts (after love). Why? Because prophecy strengthens, encourages, and comforts. It builds people up rather than tears them down. It coaches rather than condemns. When you put your hand on someone's shoulder and say "you've got this," when you speak a word of encouragement that touches exactly where someone is hurting, when you remind someone of God's promises in their moment of fear, you're prophesying.
