Becoming Un-Rotten
August 2, 2026
Why not just live life however you want and add Jesus on top? It's a fair question. Paul addresses it head-on.
In this message from the Rooted and Grounded series through Ephesians, we turn the corner from theology into the most practical section of the book. The old humanity, what Paul calls the old self, is being made rotten. That's not a metaphor. It's the actual word. And the fractured world we live in is the result of people going rotten in every direction at once. The answer isn't trying harder. It's three movements: recognize the rottenness, let God renew the attitude of your mind, then put on the new self. You don't manufacture the renewal. You respond to it.
Then Paul gets specific. Falsehood out, truth in. Sinful anger out, honest conversation in. Stealing out, generosity in. Unwholesome talk out, words that build people up in. The pattern holds every time, old self replaced by new self, not as rule-following but as the natural result of a mind being changed from the inside. Somewhere in northern India, a man whose name history never recorded chose the new self so completely that it cost him his wife, his daughters, and his life. The region is now ninety percent Christ followers. That's what putting on the new self looks like when it goes all the way.
