A Familiar Stranger

February 15, 2026

What if the most important person in your spiritual life has become someone you barely know?
In this message launching our new series, we explore how the Holy Spirit has become a "familiar stranger" to many believers. We know the name, recognize the face at church, but have never truly gotten to know this person Jesus promised would be better than His physical presence.
Before His death, Jesus gathered His followers and made a stunning claim: "It's better that I go away, because then the Holy Spirit will come." Better than walking with Jesus? Better than asking Him questions face to face? According to Jesus, absolutely yes.
Drawing from John 14-17, we discover the Holy Spirit as our Paraclete: advocate, counselor, comforter, and guide. Yet because of religious extremes on both sides (those who dismiss the Spirit entirely and those who elevate experience over Scripture), many Christians have missed out on this gift Jesus was so excited to give us.
This series addresses the gap between what Scripture teaches about the Spirit and what we actually experience. We'll learn how God speaks, how to discern His voice, and how the Spirit empowers ordinary people to do extraordinary things. You'll hear real stories of how the Holy Spirit has guided River Hills Church through impossible situations, from purchasing buildings to everyday decisions.
If you're thirsty for more, suspicious of charismatic excess, or simply uninformed about who the Holy Spirit is, this series is for you.
